Applications & Uses of Chassis Dynamometers

Climatic Environmental Chamber

MAE’s Chassis Dynamometers reproduce road conditions under the most demanding environmental conditions.

Climatic Environmental Chambers, Altitude Chambers and Wind Tunnels reproduce extreme environmental conditions to a test vehicle as well as the equipment in the test cell. MAE has designed our world class Chassis Dyanmometers and support equipment to exceed the perform requirements under these demanding conditions while having the durability to last for the test cells life cycle.

MAE provides several standard Extreme Environmental Condition (EEC) Chassis Dynamometer products for these testing environments. The selection of the Chassis Dynamometer will be dependent on the test cell capacity and test vehicle size as well as vehicle performance requirement of the Chassis Dynamometer. Mustangs EEC Chassis Dynamometers are designed to operate in test cells with temperature ranges -40°C to 60°C and altitude ranges from sea level up to 3,300 ft (1,000 m) with performance derating up to 10,000ft (3,000m) please note normally the motor and motor drive are not in the altitude chamber enviroment. Should higher altitude be required liquid cooled motors and motor drives can be used to reduce derating. When snow and water run off is present in the testing environment the EEC Chassis Dynamometers can optionally be ordered with suitable mitigation and management system. NVH – Anechoic Chamber

MAE’s Chassis Dynamometers reproduce road conditions and road sounds for your testing needs.

Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing is required for engineers to evaluate a vehicle’s sound under real world road conditions with in a laboratory environment. The Chassis Dynamometer is required to be very quite during operation so it does not emit sounds at a levels within the range of test.  The bench mark number for the Chassis Dynamometer is 50 DB(A) at 100 km/hr.  MAE has designed our world class Chassis Dynamometers and support equipment to exceed the perform requirements under these demanding NVH testing conditions while having the durability to last for the test cells life cycle.  MAE engineers our NVH Chassis Dynamometers for quite running.

MAE provides several standard NVH Chassis Dynamometer products for the NVH testing environments. The selection of your NVH Chassis Dynamometer will be dependent on the test cell vehicle capacity and performance requirements of the Chassis Dynamometer.  Mustangs NVH Chassis Dynamometers are nominally designed to operate in test cells with temperature ranges 5°C to 40°C and altitude ranges from sea level up to 3,300 ft (1,000 m) prior to performance derating. MAE’s NVH Chassis Dynamometers are designed and constructed with specialized components and techniques to reduce to Chassis Dynamometer sound generation level while running. MAE uses special hydrostatic roller bearing systems to lift the rollers on a film of oil during quit running operation.  The rollers have internal cavities with special sound suppression material attached to the inside of the roll.  The individual rolls have, roll isolation environment enclosure with sound suppression material to mitigate pit noise from migrate to the test cell. The top deck cover plates are coated with sound suppression material and interlocked to keep lower pit sound from migrating to the test cell.  The Chassis Dynamometer is mounted on large isolation blocks which reduces vibration to the facility. MAE offers various Roll Surface Plates which can be bolted for low speed testing on the Chassis Dynamometer. If your testing requirements are outside of our standard NVH environmental ranges please contact MAE with your specific requirements for a quick quote.

MAE offers various motor to roll configurations, if you choose a multiple axle drive system with independent motor/roll configuration you will be able individually control each wheel. Independent wheel control and monitoring makes it easier to isolate sounds emanating from a component of the vehicle.  In some instances customers desire to expand the testing capacity of their facility which enhance the justification of the their NVH test chamber by purchasing a higher performance Chassis Dynamometer for other R&D proposes such as independent wheel control systems, performance validation, system tuning, braking system, traction control.

Pre-Certification Emissions Laboratory Equipment:

For the customer that does not require a full certified emission test system with: environmental controlled test cell, chassis dynamometer, , emission analyzers, exhaust sampling system, calibration gas bottle supply, vehicle cooling system and etc.  For those customers performing pre-emissions certification work, comparative emission studies, calibration, tuning,  set up,  component validation, warming a vehicle up for full emissions certification and other emission and calibration work testing these Pre-Certification Chassis Dynamometers are ideal.

These Pre-Certification Chassis Dynamometers may differ in roll size compared to the Certified Emission Chassis Dynamometer that are required in a full cert cell but for R&D, Tuning, Vehicle Set-up, quick comparative testing they are ideal to be used at a fraction of the full cert cell cost.  These Pre-Certification Emission Chassis Dynamometers are some times mounted above grade with ramps or lifts and more portable then the permanent installation Certified Chassis Dynamometer systems.  The Chassis Dynamometers are certified and full calibrated to perform emission testing.  The roll size may differ from the governmental Certified Chassis dynamometer specifications  manufacturing but the road load technique and calibrations are identical to those of the certification chassis dynamometers

MAE also offers hybrid AC motor / eddy current power absorber pre-certification chassis dynamometers that can be used for emission pre-certification and performance validation. Contact our sales team for further information.

MAE’s Pre-Certification Chassis Dynamometers follow the certification criteria in the following documents with some variation due to design criteria such as roll size, base inertia, sensor type and PAU type:

MAE’s Chassis Dynamometers reproduce precision track conditions to race vehicles under high performance racing environments.

When it comes to Racing Chassis Dynamometers there is no other name to trust to your on-roll track validation testing and validation.  Mustang Advanced Engineering MAE and our sister company Mustang Dynamometer are synonymous with performance racing chassis dynamometers.  We apply active variable road load and hill grade control to vehicles under performance track conditions.  Mustangs PowerDyne® software can recreate these variable vehicle loads on many different track types: 1/4-mile sprint, flat circle track, banked circle track, curved road course and off-road courses. The Chassis Dynamometers can also be used for part throttle tuning then performing full throttle performance testing.  We have customer testimonials and video evidence of our chassis dynamometers performing roll to track validation with in 0.1 sec using a 8 second sprint car.  Mustang brings the track to the rollers.

The Performance Chassis Dynamometers can also interface with tuning software to dynamically modify engine control tables under precision loading, speed and throttle conditions. The software allows many different performance and timed test and when connected to Mustangs standalone race starting Christmas Tree it can calculate drivers reaction time. The PowerDyne® software is mature and has been in development for over 10-years and recently upgraded with new display gauges.

Typically, MAEs Performance Chassis Dynamometers are used with road race cars, strip race cars, street cars, street trucks, truck pulls, motor cycles, ATV, and performance vehicles.  Typically, these Performance Chassis Dynamometer are configured as single axle or AWD 4×4 configurations MAE can easily expand these performance chassis dynamometers to accommodate 6×6, 8×8, 10×10 or more axle configurations. If required direct coupled wheel end loading units can be attached the vehicles wheels with or without rollers.
